Eyeglass Lens Materials
-back to Patient Education-
PLASTIC CR-39:
Standard lens material.
POLYCARBONATE:
Safety Lenses, recommended for children, athletes, workers, etc. as well as rimless designs. These are Thinner and lighter than CR-39, and are supplied only with Scratch Resistant Coatings and UV-400 Inhibitors.
HI-INDEX:
Thinner lenses in every prescription. Designated as 1.60 1.66, 1.70, 1.74... The higher number will generally yield a thinner lens. These premium lenses also are supplied only with Scratch Resistant and Anti-UV coatings. Some also include Non-Glare coatings.
TRIVEX (NxT):
Stronger than POLYCARBOATE and less likely to “craze” at edges and drill holes. Lightest weight lens material. Supplied only with Scratch Resistant and Anti-UV coatings.
GLASS:
Chosen by some manufacturers for non-prescription, often polarized, sunglasses. Less popular for prescriptions – glass lenses are much heavier, not as safe in the event of impact, not available in many common lens styles, and the precision of new plastic fabricating techniques results in comparable or superior optics.
